Amaravati, January 02, 2026: The Andhra Pradesh High Court has sharply criticised the state government for persistent failures to deliver even basic amenities in welfare hostels serving vulnerable students across Andhra Pradesh.
A division bench led by Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Cheemalapati Ravi, hearing a long-pending PIL from Kakinada resident K Akhil Sriguru Teja, expressed serious dissatisfaction.
The court highlighted non-implementation of a prior government order requiring regular overnight inspections by district officials. While the government reported sanctioning 320 new RO water plants, judges called the figure insufficient given student numbers and demanded a firm timeline for safe drinking water.
They also ordered formation of an oversight committee with welfare department officials, to be personally monitored by the Chief Secretary, and alignment of infrastructure with National Commission for Protection of Child Rights guidelines on essentials like toilets and drinking water.
