Amaravati, January 12, 2026: Farmers, agricultural labourers, trade unions and mass organisations held a sit-in protest in front of the Eluru Collectorate on Monday. Demonstrators raised slogans against what they called government misuse of laws to curb democratic voices.

They focused on the Preventive Detention Act applied to Anakapalli district farmers’ leader M. Appalaraju since late December, false cases against tribal farmers in Buttayagudem mandal’s Inumuru village, and opposition to a bulk drugs project in Nakkapalli mandal over pollution risks to marine life and livelihoods.

Speakers from Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham, Agricultural Workers’ Union and CITU accused authorities of destroying standing crops and targeting students with coercive measures.
